Argentina Wins Penalty Shootout to Reach Semifinals
Nicolas Otamendi Seals Victory for Defending Champions
HOUSTON, July 4, 2024 (AP) - Nicolas Otamendi scored the decisive penalty as Argentina defeated Ecuador 4-2 on penalty kicks to reach the semifinals of the Copa America. The match had ended 1-1 after regulation and extra time.
Emiliano Martinez saved two of Ecuador's penalties, while Otamendi's strike proved to be the winning goal. Argentina will now face Brazil in the semifinals on Tuesday.
In a pre-Copa America friendly match at Soldier Field, Angel Di Maria scored the only goal as Argentina defeated Ecuador 1-0.
